Power Surge Protection

Power surges are impossible to predict, their causes including sudden voltage spikes, power supply faults, faulty family appliances, and thunderstorms. In some circumstances, even a small power surge may cause a mess on your electric systems, damaging them beyond repair.

Although lightning is most commonly associated with power surges, in fact only 2 percent of power surges are brought on by lightning strikes. The root of electricity surges are more likely due to disturbance in the electricity flow which is then restarted, or when something causes electricity to flow back into the system, for instance, a lightning attack. Of all of the energy surges experienced in homes it is estimated that more than half of them are caused by high voltage equipment or compressors cutting in and out of the electrical system. Power surges can occur multiple times every day, usually when the motors in apparatus start up or shut off, causing electricity to be diverted from or delivered to other appliances, the most common being fridges, kettles, and air conditioners.

How do surge protectors do the job?

The live cable or primary power line at a surge protector contains an additional linked connection that feeds into a ground wire. A ground wire’s purpose would be to direct any additional current safely into the floor. The surge link in the protector remains inactive until a larger than normal voltage appears. This excess current is then securely redirected through the excess earth wire, directly into the floor. This averts more current than normal from flowing into your appliances effectively ensuring that they are protected from any injury that can be caused by power surges.
